The Importance of Sanskrit

Sanskrit, often regarded as the mother of all languages, holds a unique and revered place in the world of linguistics and literature. It is the language in which some of the world’s most profound philosophical, spiritual, and scientific texts were composed, including the Vedas, Upanishads, and epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Learning Sanskrit provides direct access to these ancient scriptures, enabling a deeper understanding of their wisdom and teachings.

Beyond its religious and philosophical significance, Sanskrit also enriches cognitive development. The precision and structure of the language enhance memory, analytical skills, and logical thinking. Thus, mastering Sanskrit is not just about preserving cultural heritage; it is about developing a disciplined and sharp intellect.

For students of SCVG-VSMV, learning Sanskrit is of paramount importance to their Vedic studies and education. Proficiency and mastery of the Sanskrit language open up many doors for them in their pursuit of further shastric studies. Many students have gone on to pursue their Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Sanskrit after their initial learning of Sanskrit from our department.

About Sri Chathurveda Vidhya Ganapathi Veda Shastra Maha Vidyasthan (SCVG-VSMV)

SCVG-VSMV is a Veda Patashala & Gaushala, run by Sri Chathurveda Vidhya Ganapathi Trust – a Regd. Public Charitable Trust. Founded in 2012 by SRI R. KAMAKOTI, our institution is dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of Vedic knowledge. With over 270 students learning 4 Vedas and 6 Shakas, SCVG-VSMV today is one of the largest and best Veda Patashalas in our country. We are committed to promoting ancient wisdom and integrating it with contemporary education.

SCVG-VSMV Vision for the Future

SCVG-VSMV aims to evolve into a Vishwa Vidyalaya by focusing on a holistic approach to education centred on traditional Vedic teachings and Sanskrit. This dedication to ancient wisdom will create a comprehensive learning environment where students can deeply engage with Vedic knowledge and Sanskrit studies, preparing them for advanced academic and professional pursuits rooted in these ancient traditions.

With a projected student strength of 500+ by 2030, our institution aims to strengthen its teaching capabilities (both Vedic & Sanskrit) by introducing sub-wings consisting of a Teaching panel supporting each of the CoEs as verticals.

Offerings of Our Sanskrit Department

Our Sanskrit department is dedicated to imparting comprehensive knowledge of reading, writing, and speaking Sanskrit. Students who complete our courses can fluently speak and write in Sanskrit, setting a foundation for becoming scholars in various sastras. We start by teaching beginners to read and write Sanskrit letters and words, progressively introducing grammar lessons. Special classes are offered for students with a keen interest in mastering Sanskrit. Each student in our patashala has to undergo 1 hour of Sanskrit education every day during the length of his stay at the patashala. Sanskrit is taught on all the days when Vedic lessons are taught (all days except anadhyayanam days). As a dedicated knowledge centre we shall also be offering a Virtual wing offering to cover the global knowledge seekers.

We aim to spread the divine language of Sanskrit far and wide, bringing its timeless wisdom into every household.

Our mission is to provide acomprehensive education in Sanskrit, equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary for both linguistic proficiency and scholarly excellence. We are dedicated to creating a nurturing environment that fosters intellectual growth, cultural understanding, and a deep respect for ancient texts. By offering rigorous academic programs and promoting the study of shastras, we aim to develop future scholars and leaders who will uphold and spread the wisdom of our rich heritage.

Unique Syllabus

The syllabus we prepare for the students of our Vidyasthan is both unique and highly beneficial.A committee of two renowned scholars from UGC-affiliated colleges ensures the curriculum is simple yet profound, catering to different age groups. Our syllabus spans eight stages over eight years:

The syllabus of the Sanskrit Wing has been carefully bifurcated into 8 modules with an aim to ensure ease of learning and understanding for the students. These modules start from the basic and advanced concepts are introduced as the students become familiar with the fundamental concepts. This step wise methodical increase in the complexity of the learning ensures that the students are not overburdened & can follow the teachings properly without any problems.

Each stage incorporates stories, vocabulary, grammar, and fundamental knowledge tailored specifically for Vedic students. This rigorous syllabus ensures that students can comprehend and appreciate shastric terms and concepts, ultimately becoming Sanskrit scholars.

Teaching Methodology

Our department employs both oral and practical teaching methods. Initial sessions focus on oral and memory exercises, gradually incorporating written work and interactive materials like storyboards and cartoons. We emphasize that Sanskrit is an easy language to learn, encouraging students to enjoy the process. Monthly tests, quarterly exams, and semester evaluations help us track and support student progress. External evaluators, such as professors from Madurantakam Sanskrit College, ensure the integrity of our assessments.

Carving Out Time From The Busy Schedule Of The Vedic Students

Our students are engaged in the study of Vedas throughout the day (except on the anadhyayanam days when they are taught Academic subjects). Since Sanskrit is an important and integral part of their Vedic learning, we’ve integrated teaching Sanskrit in tandem with the Vedas. On all the days that the Vedas are taught, each student at the Patashala must mandatorily attend one hour of Sanskrit class. The classes are so designed that it does not interfere with the Veda classes and are further bifurcated at a Vedic Adhyapak level so that there is minimal to zero disruption of their Vedic lessons. The Veda Adhyapaks are extremely cooperative and work proactively with the Sanskrit department to schedule classes. Each Sanskrit Adhyapak has a maximum of 15 – 18 students to ensure personalised attention & care. This enhances student-teacher interaction.

Student Encouragement and Support

We celebrate high achievers and provide extra support for those who need it, including reexams and personalized training. Currently, our department has over 230 students, each attending daily Sanskrit classes. In the 2024-2025 academic year, our students will participate in 242 classes.

Achievements

Our students excel in Chittoor exams and competitions organized by institutions like Sanskrit Bharati. Many pursue higher degrees such as B.A. and M.A. in Sanskrit. We proudly boast 60+ Chittoor exam pass-outs, 13+ B.A. graduates, and one student now teaches Sanskrit in an international school in Maharashtra. Our Sanskrit exhibitions, dramas, speeches, and essay competitions showcase our students’ intellectual prowess and enthusiasm.

I joined the Patashala in 2019 without any prior knowledge of Sanskrit. The dedicated Adhyapaks began my education from the basics, teaching me Aksharaabhyasam, and gradually, I learned to read and write Sanskrit. At our Patashala, Sanskrit education is structured into various modules, making it easier for students to learn and master the language. For students who struggle, the teachers offer simplified lessons, ensuring everyone can write, learn, and speak Sanskrit effectively. We also learned shlokas and literature through relatable and easy-to-understand examples

The teaching method here follows a step-by-step process, where every lesson is taught with its meaning. The instructors then moved on to teaching us how to speak Sanskrit. We had daily one-hour sessions where we practised speaking Sanskrit, and our teachers would correct our diction and pronunciation. I’m proud to say that my Sanskrit skills have developed immensely. The Patashala also conducted various internal competitions, encouraging us to compete and learn in a fun and engaging environment.

I started from the very basics, with no prior knowledge of the language. The journey has been transformative, thanks to the innovative and dedicated teaching methods of our instructors.
From the beginning, our lessons were designed to be engaging and comprehensive. The teachers used stories, examples, and visual props to help us understand complex concepts more easily. This approach made learning enjoyable and fostered a deep appreciation for the richness of Sanskrit. The lessons were repeated until we fully grasped the material, ensuring that we had no lingering doubts.

Short Term Goals of the Sanskrit Department (next 5 years)

Achieve Academic Excellence:
Ensure 150 students successfully pass the Chittoor (Samskrita Bhasha Pracharini Sabha, Chittoor) exams.
Expand Sanskrit Education:
Ensure that all eligible students pass the 10th standard Sanskrit language exam at the Maharishi Sandipani Rashtriya Ved Vidya Pratishthan in Ujjain
Promote Shastric Studies:
Prepare our students to be eligible for advanced shastric studies, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in Sanskrit.
Establish Specialized Departments:
Initiate two new departments focusing on specific shastras, such as Nyaya and Vyakarana.
Enhance Language Proficiency:
Continually improve the Sanskrit language skills of all our students, fostering a deep appreciation and understanding of this ancient language.

Our Future Plans

In the short term, we intend to restart the online Sanskrit classes that we had initiated in 2020-21. (Incidentally, it was a huge success with about 400 students joining and over 200 students completing the course and about 10 students went on to complete their B.A, in Sanskrit after attending our online classes)
Our long-term plans involve creating a full-fledged Sanskrit centre of learning in the SCVG-VSMV that not only caters to the needs of students wanting to learn Sanskrit but also develops into a centre of excellence for research on Sanskrit.
